Frequently asked questions
What age group is the True Beauty study for?
This study is designed for high school and college-aged young women to process in small groups, as a class study, Bible study, etc. Mature middle school girls would be fine as well, and should be determined by her mother.
Who should lead these studies?
Ideal leaders are mothers, mentors, female teachers or coaches.
I know a young woman in my life that I would like to gift this study to for her to read on her own. Is that recommended?
We do not recommend giving a young woman one of these guides to read on her own. This study is purposely designed to be done with a mother, leader or mentor either 1:1 or in a small group.
Is this an online study?
No. This study is primarily done with physical books; however, there are QR codes throughout the study that are incorporated into various chapters so each leader and girl will need a device that can scan the codes and she will need internet access for each code.
If your girls do not have phones that can scan the codes, you can use the QR code in the front of the Leader Guide that takes you to the resource page with all the media assets and you can bring up each audio segment or webpage information from the code on a larger screen for the group to view/read/listen to together.
What is your recommended size of a True Beauty Study Group?
This study can be experienced 1:1 or in a small group setting up to 8 girls. A group larger than 8 to 10 girls we recommend you split into smaller groups with a mentor to lead each one.
Additionally, larger settings can be successful beginning each session with a lead teacher and then break into smaller groups for question and discussion time with a leader for each group.
Should leaders do the study themselves prior to leading a group?
As with any study, it’s best for the leader to go through the material first. We recommend she read each chapter prior to each meeting and allow time to pray, process and prepare for each session.
In addition, there is a QR code in the Leader’s guide that takes the mentor to a resource page with all the media assets in one place where she can view and listen to each one ahead of time.
How frequently should our study group meet?
This will depend on the group. Go at the pace that works best for you and your group. We recommend every week or every other week. We do not recommend trying to do this study over a weekend retreat or at a conference. This study is meant to be done 1:1 or in a small group and with enough time to process through the material and have opportunities for discussions.
How should I structure the study time? Do we read through the material together or should the girls do the reading and answers on their own?
Ideally the first chapter would be done together start to finish to get your group started and help everyone become familiar with the study. Leaders either read out loud as a group with girls taking turns reading or have the girls read some on their own and then discuss as you go. Be sure to allow time for answering the questions and interaction. The leader guide includes answers.
For Chapter 2 on, you can decide to do the rest together or have them do parts on their own and discuss together when you meet. It really depends on the girls and their personality, age etc. We trust good leaders know what’s most effective with their girls. One recommendation is to have the girls read the main text on their own prior to meeting, and save the scripture and questions to read and do together as a group so the group can process together and the girls have the opportunity to answer in the group. Another reason to do this is that looking up and reading Scripture might be new to some of your girls and it will be helpful to read those parts together and discuss. Make sure each young woman has access to a Bible.
How long does each session take?
For Chapter 1, we recommend planning for 2 hours. This will give you time for an introduction, sharing your plans for the study and then getting started. For the following chapters, we recommend 1 to 2 hours depending on what else you include.
How many weeks should we plan to meet?
There are 10 Chapters. If you plan to complete a chapter a week, that would be 10 weeks. We also recommend ending your study with a party and incorporating the signing of their True Beauty Declaration (found at the end of the study) so be sure to allow an extra session to do this.
